ACTION ALERT!
Tell your Senators to vote NO on the SAVE Act suite of bills!
Friends,
This Women’s History Month, we must take action to defend gender equality at the ballot.
Women’s History Month is a time to celebrate the achievements of women all over the world, but while there is much to celebrate, there are still battles to be fought. The SAVE Act is one of those battles.
The US House has again voted to advance legislation to the US Senate that would fundamentally change how eligible Americans register to vote. But this time, they’re adding measures for voters to “show their papers” at the polling location before they vote.
The House-passed SAVE America Act (SAVE Act 2.0) would make it harder for eligible voters to register AND to cast a ballot, particularly women, as well as trans and nonbinary people.
Americans who have changed their name — like married women and members of the trans community — would be required to secure updated documentation to register to vote. Surveys show that eight in ten married women have changed their surname, meaning they do not possess a birth certificate that matches their current legal name and, therefore, could not present it as valid proof of citizenship. There are an estimated 69 million American women who lack the paperwork that reflects their current name. That’s 69 million women whose votes would be suppressed under this policy.
In addition to potential issues accessing documentation due to name changes, the trans, nonbinary, and intersex communities may face challenges around the gender marker on their passports. The Administration has indicated that passport applications requesting an X marker or a gender marker that differs from the gender assigned at birth may face delays.
That’s millions of voices silenced in a time when we need to hear from women, trans and nonbinary Americans, and their allies more than ever.
At the League, we’re asking you to stand with us to oppose these measures. We want our elections to be free, fair, and accessible for all eligible Americans, and we won’t let efforts to create barriers to citizens' full participation in our democracy, like the SAVE Act, move forward.
