PRESIDENTS' LETTER
October 2020

Ready, Set, VOTE!

by Elizabeth Crowe

Just one month to go till 2020 Election Day! League is in a whirlwind of activities to make sure are we engaging with as many community members as possible, so that people exercise their right to vote, and vote smart. Thank you to all of our leaders and volunteers who have spent hours registering voters; researching ballot initiatives and preparing presentations; posting local candidate and election information to VOTE411; preparing candidate forums; writing and mailing postcards for National Popular Vote; just to name a few recent activities.

While the pandemic has certainly made our work more challenging, because nearly all of our pre-election activities are taking place online, we can all contribute to the work in some way without leaving our homes. Here are just a few ways you can help out:

  • Check your voting information, and encourage people to register. League is offering five more voter registration opportunities throughout Boulder County and our amazing team of volunteers can help anyone who needs to register or change their voting information. We have expanded and increased our outreach to a greater diversity of our community members and hope this will help ALL people who are able, to vote.

  •  Promote VOTE411.org as a credible, comprehensive source for election information. You can do this by email, social media or as you chat with family, co-workers and friends. Information on candidates and ballot initiative will be uploaded soon, and LWVBC will provide images, weblinks and other materials you can use to spread the word.

  • Submit questions for our candidate forums, then watch and tell others to do the same. Through October 15, LWVBC will be hosting online forums for 9 races and we'd like to reach 10,000 people or more with the forums! We're conveniently collecting questions for any and all of the forums, through an online submission form. What issues would you like to be sure candidates address? This year, we are providing Spanish interpretation for most forums, increasing participation among our Latinx community.

  • Participate in our ballot issue presentations, and hear about League's own positions on local ballot issues. The presentations take place on October 4 for City of Boulder issues, and October 11 for Longmont and Louisville issues. If you can't join live, you'll be able to watch and share later.
  • Visit the LWVBC website and watch your email inbox for information on all of these activities and more. Thanks for all you do to empower voters, and defend democracy!

Candidate and Issue Forums

The League of Women Voters of Boulder County is presenting several candidate and issue forums from October 1-15.

  • Candidate forums for state House districts 10, 11, 12, 13 and 33, Senate districts 17 and 18, Boulder County Commissioner district 1 and 2, and Town of Superior Board.
  • Issue forums for Colorado issues as well as city of Boulder, Longmont and Louisville.

Issue forums provide a link to submit questions in English or Spanish in an online form. Click here or visit our calendar of events for dates, times, and links. The League will review all submitted questions and select and edit for clarity, if necessary. Questions not asked during the forum will be provided to the candidates after the event.

Welcome to our newest members!

Welcome to seven new members since our last newsletter in September:  Carol Friefeld, Eliana White, Chris and Eliana Salter, Marcus Ogren, Marie Farrelly-Hansen, and Erin Laspa Henry.  Some of these new members have hit the ground running.  Marcus now co-leads our Voting Methods Team, having been active on the team as a non-member.  Chris and Eliana and their two children are stars of our Voter Registration Team, vowing as a family to register 100 voters by election time with 21 registered so far; their family became aware of the League when they exited Eliana’s naturalization ceremony in Centennial a year ago.  Anna (who had just turned 18) and Eliana both registered to vote then and greatly appreciated the League being there to register them.

Statement Regarding the Supreme Court Confirmation Process

From the League of Women Voters of the U.S.

The League of Women Voters opposes a rushed Supreme Court confirmation process. The U.S. Senate must prioritize protecting the American people during the pandemic and securing out elections.

On September 23, 2020, the League of Women Voters board president Deborah Turner and CEO Virginia Kase issued the following joint statement on rushing the Supreme Court appointment process.
