“Mr. Smith Goes to Washington” (1939)
Tuesday, June 11 | 7:30 p.m. | Runtime 2h 9m | NR
Naive
and idealistic Jefferson Smith (James Stewart), leader of the Boy
Rangers, is appointed on a lark by the spineless governor of his state.
He is reunited with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and
childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine (Claude Rains). In Washington,
however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political
process as his earnest goal of a national boys' camp leads to a conflict
with the state political boss who tries to corrupt Smith and then later
attempts to destroy Smith with a scandal. Produced and directed by
Frank Capra and co-starring Jean Arthur. This event is being co-hosted with the League of Women Voters of Boulder County.
